Snow to Sun Birthday Celebrations!

Rio turns 1!!!
(This was my attempt at being creative, trying to get a picture of Rio on his first with the singular Washington Monument...turns out it would have been unsafe to let him sit alone on the edge of the Potomac-
oh well- I'm already brainstorming ideas for #2)

We had a week of celebrations thanks to good friends and family! It started with Alex buying Rio a helium balloon a week before (which I wanted to hold off on until the actual day, because I knew how much Rio would enjoy it, and boy did he!!!) I wish I could tap into that JOY-Well actually I can, because Rio fills me with such a deep solace! Watching him develop over the last year has been the greatest gift of all ....Anyways enough sap from me:)

Then we had a weekend of friends, The Maddens and Welch's came to Breckenridge for free music on the mountain, it was so fun to see them. We had Rio (1), Emerson (2), and Wesley (3) all hanging together. It was crazy to see what all the next birthdays will bring developmentally. They even surprised Rio with a mini-celebration. He was enthralled by the candle, as seen below. THEN, even more friends the Gonzalez' came the next day for another concert (Rusted Root). Their oldest son, Copper has been asking his mom to "buy" them another baby, so he was so sweet with Rio!

Then onto DC...We thought it would be real special to spend Rio's 1st with his Great Grandma. We thought it would be a quiet weekend with the 4 of us, but the rest of the east coast Peterson's could not resist helping us celebrate... The Clark/Lavelle's came down from PA, and the Dowey's drove the 10 hours from NH (after landing only 24 hours before from Australia). It was so wonderful to spend the weekend with family!

We are a little concerned about Rio's future celebrations and cake eating...he may be permanently scarred from his curiosity of fire...he touched the candle:( And never ate cake:( Maybe ice cream parties are in our future.
And lastly, we were able to visit Grandpa's grave at Arlington. The headstone just got placed, which was a happy surprise to us all. His resting spot is so beautiful with a growing tree a few feet away. He is near the border to the Pentagon, which was his last assignment. His area is also shared with the Pentagon 9-11 Victims Memorial. And of course, it was so touching to see Rio crawling over to say "HI."
The whole week was a wonderful celebration of life-
Happy Spring!
